Moving can be Quite Stressful for Pets Too!

Denver Moving HelpWe here at Denver Moving Helpers are huge fans of pets and we take pride in treating them as members of your family.  Often times, pets are overlooked and can sometimes create a bit of a hassle on moving day.  We have gathered some great information from both moving companies and animal rights groups alike to help better understand the best and least stressful way to move with your beloved pets.

Moving to a new home may be one of the most stressful life events you’ll ever have to tackle. But in the chaos of cardboard boxes, packing tape and moving trucks, you might not realize how stressed your pets feel, too. We chatted with ASPCA Director of Anti-Cruelty Behavior Research Dr. Katherine Miller about ways to make the transition as safe and easy as possible for your furry friends.

Choosing a new neighborhood, house or apartment
Before you pick out your dream home, make sure your pet will love it just as much as you do. It’s a good idea to walk around the neighborhood to determine whether the area seems safe for your pets. Be on the lookout for neighborhood dogs that seem aggressive or are left unattended.

When it comes to square footage needs, cats and dogs differ. For your feline friends, ensure your potential new space allows for plenty of room to build vertically—it’s easy to create a lot of virtual space with shelving, such as kitty blocks on top of furniture. Consider your dog’s needs on a case-by-case basis. Older dogs, puppies and dogs with house training issues will need to go outside often, which might be difficult in an apartment building with lots of stairs or a house without a yard.

Pet Friendly Moving Help in DenverPacking up your home
Cats aren’t big fans of change. You can help your cats (and skittish dogs) adjust to the moving process by bringing in moving boxes early, and by keeping your furry friends in a familiar room you plan to pack up last. On moving day, keep your pets in a quiet room with the door shut, or at a friend’s house. This will ensure that your cat or dog won’t get scared and try to make a quick getaway while the movers load up the truck.

Planning your road trip
Many pets haven’t spent much time in crates or cars. In the weeks or months leading up to the big trip, you can prepare your pets by gradually acclimating them to their crates. First, place their food inside an open crate, and eventually have them eat their meals in the crate with the door shut. Try carrying your pets around the house in the crate or taking a short drive. You can help your pets develop a positive association with the crate by providing treats and playtime at the conclusion of crate time. Taking these steps will make moving day a lot more comfortable for you and your furry friends.

Settling in to your new place
When you arrive at your new home at the end of your long journey, it will be tempting to set your dog or cat loose in the house to explore. However, a new and unfamiliar space can be overwhelming to your pets. Start by allowing them to adjust to one room—their “home base”—which should include their favorite toys, treats, water and food bowls, and litter box for cats. When they seem comfortable, gradually introduce them to other rooms in the house, while keeping some doors shut. You can slowly move your cat’s litter box to a different room, too.

Technology Meets the Moving Industry

New, easy to use apps are starting to reshape the $16 billion dollar moving industry.

Today, we will be exploring some of the latest, and coolest, technological developments in the world of moving and moving labor.  The most recent identifiable trend in the moving industry has been the emergence of the self or 'DIY' move.  More and more often, people are starting to figure out that by simply renting the moving truck themselves, and hiring some strong moving labor to do all the heavy lifting, they are able to potentially save hundreds versus using a traditional moving company.  To take things a step further, customers have also recently voiced their desire to make the searching and booking process easier since, let's face it, there is literally an ocean of movers and moving labor services to choose from out there, and more often than not, finding a quality mover is fairly difficult and very time consuming, with some shoppers spending days or even weeks searching for the right mover.

Now enter the new tidal wave of start-ups and their easy to use 'moving apps', applications specifically designed to connect users with high-quality, fully verified movers and moving labor.  If you are looking to simplify your next move, then these three tech-savvy apps are certainly worth a look!

Walkboard -  Walkboard is a completely free online and mobile booking platform that works with a network of thousands of quality service providers around the country to offer you easy to use, customized move options.

BellhopsBellhops is a modern company that combines technology with a unique team of talented workers to provide users with a fun, friendly, and professional moving experience.  The Bellhops app is absolutely free to use!

iMoverThe free iMover app, brought to you by Equate Media, enables customers to take videos of their inventory and share them directly with moving companies.

Where to Find Useful Information About Moving.

 Denver Moving Helpers
Time to buckle up! Because we have jam packed this article with tons of moving information and links to various moving website powerhouses!

We all know that in order to find any useful information on a particular subject online these days, we may end up having to dig through a little bit of garbage to get there.  This is especially true when searching online for useful information about moving, as this industry is a very competitive one and the field seems to be well stocked with moving 'experts'.

While our blog is one of the best moving blogs out there (you better believe it), there are many others like it that have been around for much longer and are able to provide great information and tried and true tips that can really save you both time and money.  We have taken the liberty of linking those sites here and have spent some quality time getting to know the content of each site for you. Enjoy!

Movers.com - Movers.com is a well known, trusted moving website established 19 years ago!  They have a long standing reputation for helping customers locate quality, licensed movers, and their site also features some very informational moving guides and best of all everything is free to use.

Movers.org - Much like the site above, Movers.org is a well trusted moving site, but they are relatively newer.  They offer all the same great features as Movers.com, but don't quite have as many moving guides to offer to their visitors.  They do have some very useful information about packing materials and their costs.  Overall, our staff was very impressed with the quality of content found at Movers.Org.

Unpakt.com - Unpakt is a little more strait forward than the other sites listed here, and really doesn't offer much information when it comes to moving guides.  They do however have an excellent locator service for visitors searching for both local, or long distance moving companies, and their site has an easy to use, very sleek experience.  Unpakt really excels when it comes to their extremely user friendly inventory interface, which makes it very easy to inventory and calculate your next move based on each piece of furniture you have, then pairing users with the best local moving services in their area.

TheMovingBlog.com - This site has it all.  A great user interface to help visitors find great moving companies, as well as tons of articles and moving guides that are well written, and fun to read.  Overall this is just a wonderful site that is well designed and is packed with loads of information that is guaranteed to save you some time, money, and stress.

Long Haul Movers for Interstate Moves:
Denver Moving LaborIf your family is moving to a new state and you find yourself in way over your head, then we highly suggest recruiting one the industry's 'big dogs', or long haul moving companies to handle every aspect of your move from start to finish.  These companies lead the moving industry and set the standard by which most other movers do business:

North American Van Lines - Established in 1933, NAVL is arguably the leader and largest moving company in the United States.  North American specializes in long distance moves and continues to 'write the book' for the rest of the industry to follow.  Denver Moving Helpers is proud to have received much of our training and practices from our time working with this great company.

Allied Van Lines - Founded in 1928, Allied actually merged with North American Van Lines back in 1998, combining the two largest companies in the industry.  Allied has become known for their competitive rates and excellent customer service.

United/Mayflower - Founded in 1927, Mayflower merged with United to become the second largest player in the industry.  Both United and Mayflower offer unparalleled levels of quality service and their movers are often very highly trained in all aspects of moving and packing.

Moving Labor Referral Services:

More and more common in the moving industry are those who are choosing to take the DIY approach.  By renting their own trucks and simply hiring moving labor, clients are saving hundreds of dollars versus using a full service moving company for local moves, as well as Interstate moves.  Several websites offer a 'moving labor marketplace', where savvy customers can choose between different moving labor companies to shop for the best quality and price.  Among the leaders in this niche market are HireAHelper, Moving Staffers, Moving Labor, and Simple Moving Labor.

Of coarse, there are tons and tons of moving sites available on the web and there is no way to list all the good ones in one single place.  If you know of another great moving site that we missed, feel free to post a link in the comments and we will add it to our growing list.

Where to Get Free Boxes ~ Saving by Recycling

Everyone knows that moving expenses can add up pretty quickly.  From the endless need for packing materials, to hiring those hard working movers, and even possibly having to take time off from work to complete your move, we here at Denver Moving Helpers understand both the stress and financial burden that families and individuals can experience during the moving process.

Which is exactly why we strive to save our clients time and money whenever we possibly can, and hopefully help take some of the stress out of their overall moving experience as well.  One way we are certainly able to do this is by helping our clients secure free boxes for their move, since, aside from hiring the movers themselves, boxes are usually the second most expensive aspect of any move.  A quick search at two of the most common places people buy boxes, Home Depot & Lowes, and one will quickly realize how just 20-25 boxes can cost between $40-$50.

To help eliminate this unnecessary cost, Denver Moving Helpers has compiled a list of great places that are 'prime for the picking' when it comes to finding free boxes for your upcoming move:

1. Craigslist
If you have planned ahead and are not moving at the last minute, then the "free" section of craigslist is by far the best place to find boxes.  Environmentally sound folks like yourself often list their used moving boxes on the website for free in an effort to recycle and help out a neighbor at the same time.  The variety of boxes is great here, as people often list many different sized boxes from small book cartons up to large wardrobe boxes, which can really save some cash.  Listings can be slow however, so this approach could take from a day or two, up to a week or so.

2. Liquor Stores
Liquor stores receive tons of boxes each week and usually don't mind if you ask to take a few, so this a great way to get free boxes quickly!  The boxes will likely be smaller and all the same size, but these boxes are sturdy and are great for books, decor, dishware, and smaller electronics.  Liquor stores are usually swimming in boxes so stop on in and ask a clerk or manager if you can recycle a stack or two!

3. Major Retailers & Grocery Stores
Major retailers and grocers like Walmart, King Soopers, Safeway, Best Buy, Target, Costco, Petsmart, Sam’s Club, and Office Depot burn through boxes like you wouldn't believe.  Just swing around back behind the store, and be sure to use common sense when it comes to safety!
